Waterstones Children's Book Festival

For children's and young adults literary festivals and speaking opportunities, please contact my publicist, Dominic Kingston, at Hachette Children's Group.

For any events for adults, please contact my publicist, Kate Moreton, at Gollancz.

I am a PGCE-qualified teacher with an M.A. in Creative Writing.I am based in Inverness, in the Scottish Highlands, and happy to travel by car, train, or plane! I have Public Liability Insurance, provided by the Society of Authors. Please note that, due to being very rural and having unreliable internet, I am currently unable to do any virtual / online events. If you are a bookshop or festival based outside the UK - please get in touch to hear about funding available from Scottish Books International.

I run classes and workshops for children, young adults and adults for organisations including Pop Up Projects LTD, Grimm & Co., the Writers’ and Artists’ Institute and Moniack Mhor. I have been a guest at festivals and events including BBC Authors Live, Waterstones' Children's Book Festival, AYE Write Glasgow, Bath Literary Festival, MCM Comic Con and CYMERA, and have also given speeches and led discussions at Nottingham Trent University and CILIP.

My author visits for children and young people can be tailored to suit your setting: I can work with assembly-style events, small groups, or class-sized workshops. Strangeworlds and Artezans are all about magical adventure, world-building and description. Events for JAMIE focus on friendship, Pride, LGBTQ+ history, and positivity. Stepfather Christmas events are a fun look at story-telling, Christmas, and putting a new spin on familiar characters. Events for KICKFLIP are suitable for ages 12 and up, and are about comic book creation, and how to be a graphic novelist. For events for adults, I can take part in panel discussion and moderation, creative writing teaching, book club events, and more.

My rates for school visits are charged in line with the Society of Authors guidance and Scottish Book Trust funding:

  • £210 per one-off session. A 'session' could be a workshop event, a presentation, or an author-career talk.

  • £300 for half a day, maximum three hours of activities. Could include workshops and / or presentation-style events, we can tailor start and finish times to suit your setting.

  • £500 for a full-day visit. Maximum six hours, including book signing to be structured as school prefers. Can include workshops and / or presentation-style events

  • Visit rates do not include travel and accomodation, which must be discussed and agreed prior to booking confirmation. For international events and visits, there is funding available from Scottish Books International, subject to application.

  • I am able to supply books for events, but always encourage organisers to support their local independent bookshop in the first instance

  • For library and festival rates and conditions, please get in touch with either myself or one of my publicists

  • I am registered with Scottish Book Trust's Literature Live, and funding is available through SBT, subject to application.

Please get in touch via my Contact Form to discuss your requirements! I look forward to hearing from you!

Testimonials

It was an absolute pleasure to have LD come and visit SNA as part of our reading festival last week. She was a great hit with the students, who were particularly interested to hear LD's author journey and hear about her creative writing processes. Many students were also really excited to chat with LD during breaktime and get their books signed too. Engaging, genuine and fascinating - LD was exceptional for an author visit and I'll be looking to book her again for the future.
